Esse mistério do sudeste africano não é como os círculos “alienígenas” que aparecem em campos de cultura e que geralmente são feitos por humanos com a intenção de aprontar uma pegadinha.

Esse fenômeno das “culturas-círculos”, que surgiu na década de 1970, foi finalmente derrubado como hipótese sobrenatural quando em 1991 dois homens confessaram que haviam criado os padrões – apena alguns – como uma brincadeira.

Já os círculos que aparecem na Namíbia, e que ficaram conhecidos como “círculos de fada”, parecem ser ação da natureza, mas os cientistas ainda não conseguiram desvendá-los.

Eles são círculos que aparecem no deserto africano, em aéreas remotas, a cerca de 180 quilômetros do vilarejo mais próximo. Depois de alguns anos, eles simplesmente desaparecem.

O estudo

Em 2005, o biólogo Walter Tschinkel, da Universidade Estadual da Flórida (EUA), notou pela primeira vez as clareiras estranhas na Namíbia. Dezenas de milhares de círculos expunham o solo arenoso vermelho da área isolada (onde apenas avestruzes, leopardos e outros animais de grande porte vagueiam), com um anel grande de grama em volta.

Curioso, Tschinkel resolveu pesquisar porque isso acontecia. Para tanto, contou com a ajuda do pessoal da reserva natural NamibRand, imagens de satélite, dados de GPS e fotos aéreas.

Ele descobriu que os círculos são estáveis – surgem rapidamente, quase em seu tamanho total, crescem rapidamente ao seu tamanho total, permanecem assim por alguns anos e desaparecem tão rapidamente quanto surgem.

As imagens de satélite de 2004 e 2008 mostram que os menores têm cerca de 2 metros de diâmetro, enquanto os maiores podem chegar a quase 12 metros de diâmetro. Os pequenos duram em torno de 24 anos, e os maiores podem existir por 75 anos. A maioria dura entre 30 e 60 anos. No fim, plantas recolonizam os círculos e suas formas desaparecem.

Porque eles se formam?

“A questão do por que é muito difícil”, disse Walter Tschinkel. “Há uma série de hipóteses sobre a mesa, e as provas para nenhum delas é convincente”.

Anteriormente, Tschinkel achava que os círculos marcavam ninhos subterrâneos de cupins. Mas escavações não mostraram nenhuma evidência disso. Diferenças de nutrientes do solo ou morte de plantas por vapores tóxicos no solo são mais duas teorias que não possuem evidências.

Tschinkel determinou que os círculos se formam apenas em solo arenoso com pedregosidade mínima, e não aparecem em dunas ou leques aluviais, onde as areias são depositadas pela água. Isso não ajuda a explicar muita coisa.

Por enquanto, a principal suspeita é de que os círculos sejam produto de alguma forma natural de auto-organização das plantas. “Há alguns modelos matemáticos que são baseados na ideia de que as plantas podem retirar recursos à sua volta para utilizá-los. Isso tem um feedback positivo sobre o crescimento da planta onde elas estão localizadas, mas tem um efeito negativo sobre as plantas a uma distância maior”, conta o pesquisador.

Os modelos de computador baseados nesta matemática geram paisagens um pouco parecidas com os círculos de fadas da Namíbia. Ainda assim, não explica porque as plantas estão criando esse padrão, já que a ideia de que elas estão “absorvendo” nutrientes do solo foi descartada.

Infelizmente, os círculos devem continuar um mistério da paisagem africana por muito tempo: com o isolamento e a falta de financiamento para estudá-los, a ciência vai demorar para saber porque isso acontece.
